Don't chase big goals

On goal setting
My son recently got a toy tank that fires tiny plastic missiles. It’s pretty cool.
It wasn’t long and we were having a competition on who could launch the tiny missile the farthest.
At first, I crushed him due to the simple fact that I understand trajectory and he didn’t…
After a 2-minute lesson he got the idea and it was an even playing field.
The idea: Don’t aim too high. Don’t aim too low. Aim somewhere in the middle.
And trajectory 100% relates to how to set goals in business.
I’m sure you’ve heard things like “you gotta think BIG”…
But I gotta call B.S. on that.
Here’s how trajectory works:
1.) If you set a REALLY BIG unrealistic goal you are going to aim high, then launch…
You will go out soaring, only to find out this shit is hard, and you will come down almost on the same path you went up. So, in actual distance covered…you didn’t make it too far.
2.) If you aim too low, you won’t cover much distance either. Low goals = low achievement.
3.) Set the most realistic and achievable goal and aim “just right”. You will cover the most distance and make the most progress.

Don’t get me wrong….think big and have the big goal.
But don’t put it in your crosshairs yet. What you need to put in your crosshairs is the next and most logical thing you can achieve. Keep an eye on that big goal as a target you’ll get to... But don’t aim for it immediately.
- Chase what you can achieve.
- Use achievements as stepping stones.
Why do it this way...?
If you come right out of the gate with the biggest goal imaginable, what happens if you don’t achieve it in 6-12 months??
You’ll feel defeated. You'll lose momentum.
All you need to succeed is to keep moving forward. To keep that momentum, you need the right trajectory.
To summarize…
The idea: Don’t aim too high. Don’t aim too low. Aim somewhere in the middle. Do it over and over and over again and that is the true formula for that big goal even standing a chance of coming to fruition.
Kill comfort,
Jerred
