When I was in college, my roommates and I played a simple game any time we would go to a restaurant, order food somewhere, etc.

The game…?

We would try to order in such a way that the server (or person taking the order) would not have a SINGLE follow-up question.

You know what I mean… If you go to a restaurant and order a steak, what will their next question be?

Me: “I’ll take the steak.”

Server: “How would you like that cooked?”

RULE #1 - If they ask a follow-up question, you lose.

RULE #2 - If they don’t ask ANY questions, you win.

Winning typically meant friends paying for your meal, drinks, etc. The stakes were high! Don't worry... your server will love you for making their job easier (maybe..)

This game is harder than it sounds. You have to get prepared when you start looking at the menu. It adds just the right amount of stress and pressure to your social outing 😜.

A few questions you have to avoid…

  • Asking how you would like something cooked…That applies to eggs, meat, etc.
  • Side options; these can blindside you if you don’t pay attention. I.e. did you order the baked potato and forget to say I’ll take it plain and unloaded? You lost.
  • Ordering water? You better say with "no lemon" as fast as possible, just in case.

It’s an awesome game and you should try it the next time you head to a restaurant.

So why tell you that story…?

This is how you build an audience of potential customers. You have to do your research, stay sharp, and come prepared.

Most people go to a restaurant and almost act surprised when they come to take your order.

Likewise, I see so many business owners who have NO IDEA who their exact target audience will be.

This can’t be you.

Do your research and come prepared. Leave ZERO QUESTIONS as to who your audience is, what things they like, what they do, etc.

Why?

Well, whether you do paid-adverting or organic outreach… Every time you don’t know the answer to the audience question(s) it costs you something. Advertise to the wrong people… you’ll waste A LOT of money. Reach out to the wrong people… you’ll waste A LOT of time…

The marketplace will penalize you for trying to meet a need that a certain person doesn’t have. It’s called capitalism. 

The more time and effort you put in on the front end, the closer you are to winning.
